St. Catharines, Ontario – 22 May 2019 – Rocketship Park, the digital design studio based in the heart of Niagara’s emerging tech sector, has today announced the launch of their deceptively strategic puzzle game Word Forward. A re-release of the earlier App Store classic, Word Forward is now available for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Apple TV.

Originally released in 2014 by studio co-founder Shane McCafferty, Word Forward has been completely rebuilt to introduce new players to it’s charming challenge. In its original incarnation, Word Forward was played than 6 million times, and was featured by Apple as the #1 puzzle game on the App Store worldwide.


Word Forward presents players with a grid of 25 lettered tiles and challenges them to clear every tile from the board through the creation of words. Players can move or change tiles, but their options to do so are limited. This creates an incredibly tricky challenge to clear every letter, which players will need to do to declare victory in 500 different puzzles. Unlike the majority of competing word games available today, Word Forward is the rare word game that rewards careful forethought and strategy over simply spelling the longest words.


“It may be a head-scratching puzzler, but Word Forward was also designed to evoke a feeling of complete and utter calm when it was released back in 2014,” said Shane McCafferty, Rocketship Park co-founder and lead designer. “Every aspect of the game was designed to elicit a comfortable tranquility in its players, right down to the choice of fonts. This quest for calm doesn’t mean that Word Forward isn’t incredibly challenging - but it’s the sort of challenge that you can take at your own pace. like a crossword or sudoku that you’d enjoy over tea on a Sunday morning.  


“While I’ve continued to reference Word Forward when I speak to students and fellow industry vets about designing games around an emotion, due to the changing nature of technology, we had reached a point where the original game would no longer be available to the public. To remedy this, we’ve rebuilt Word Forward from the ground-up using Unity. Not only does this allow us to keep Word Forward alive and well for new audiences, but we can finally bring the game to new platforms for the first time.”


While the original Word Forward was exclusive to the iPhone and iPad, Rocketship Park’s use of Unity allows them to bring the game to Android and Apple TV for the first time. In addition to today’s launch, Word Forward will also be coming to PC and Mac gamers later this summer.
