July 17, 2012 | By Danny Cowan

[Gamasutra rounds up the latest news in the world of App Store gaming, featuring standout releases like Amazing Alex, Super Ox Wars, Tiny Wings HD, and Skweek.]

Angry Birds publisher Rovio has released Amazing Alex, a reworked version of developer Snappy Touch's physics puzzler Casey's Contraptions. An iPad version is also available."

- Mobile Game Pick: Super Ox Wars (Llamasoft)
"Though Super Ox Wars resembles an early-'80s shooter in terms of presentation, its gameplay is surprisingly complex. The game features a polarity system that awards the player bonuses and power-ups throughout each level, depending on how many items of a particular color are collected."

- Stuck on Full-Body Game Recurse for iPad 2
"Three game modes exploit Recurse's simple premise of moving one's body in green areas while avoiding red areas. Shuffle and slide modes involve getting the highest score in 30 seconds. In the three-strikes survival mode, the game penalizes for any missed green areas and touched red areas."

- Tiny Wings Gets Major Update
To commemorate the launch of Tiny Wings HD for the iPad, the original iOS version of Tiny Wings has been updated with new levels, new playable characters, and an additional gameplay mode.

- New On iOS: Gets To The Exit (roll7)
"In the Lemmings-like Gets to the Exit, players must guide as many members of the 'Gets' tribe to the exit as possible, avoiding dangers and traps along the way."

- Mobile Game Pick: The Big Big Castle! (Beep Games)
"The Big Big Castle! is a free-to-play and physics-heavy iPad game designed by Ron Gilbert (yes, that Ron Gilbert) and Clayton Kauzlaric (yes, that Clayton Kauzlaric)."

- Freeware iOS Game Pick: Skweek (Freshuu)
"Skweek was one of the best games released for the Atari Lynx and also a rather unique action-puzzler that managed to appear on most 16-bit platforms. An iOS remake of Skweek launches this week, published by Freshuu."

- Trailer: Great Big War Game (Rubicon Development)
"Like its Indie Gala-starring predecessor, Great Big War Game is a turn-based strategy title in which players pit small armies of land, air, and sea forces against an AI opponent in a lengthy single-player campaign, or against a fellow human in an included multiplayer mode."
