Game Balance survey
by Maciej Szczesnik on 06/02/14 07:14:00 am   Expert Blogs

The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community.
The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company.

I am doing research about games and game balance. The results will be published on my  GDC Europe 2014 talk titled "Fun or Frustration: Game Balance Pitfalls and Recipes". I will also make them available online (also here on my Gamasutra blog).

With this research I will try to answer a few game balance questions such as preferred diffuculty levels in different age groups and game genres.

If you are a gamer and heve about 2 spare minutes, please help. I need a lot of responses to make the research valid.

Here is the survey link:

I will be greatefull for sharing it with your friends. The more responses, the better the results.

Also done, though I don't really agree with the results I put in. Many of the questions felt like they should have been a text entry answer.

For example, I don't dislike dynamic difficulty because its cheating... but because it balances for players below my level. Balance depends on the player and because I prefer harder than average... automatic balancing rarely meets my needs.

Done :)
But this survey does not follow the standard rules for surveys... expect lesser results...
For example : Do not allow choices with an middle ! Visitors usesally choose the middle, use a 6 choices.
Also i would recommend what Ian Richard said, some text entry's especially at the end make sense.

Ian, thanks for the comments. I probably should just put "yes" and "no". The last part of the answer will not be considered important. Thanks again.

Couldn't help but noticed that while mobile platforms were listed in the survey, platforms such at the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS were not. I've likely logged more time in handheld consoles than any other platform, as many others may have as well.

The platform is just a helper question. I've to admit, I'm mostly interested in PC and console games, but thanks for your comment.
