Saling The World: Mass Effect 3 heads multiplatform charts worldwide

Gamasutra's weekly column, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide.

This week's charts, with data taken from March 15th, 2012, find Mass Effect 3 and Mario Party 9 leading domestic multiplatform software sales, while Shining Blade and One Piece Kaizoku Musou emerge as strong sellers in Japan.

Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows:

Multiplatform

Mass Effect 3 tops multiplatform sales in North America and the UK, as Mario Party 9 also makes a strong first-week impression in both regions.

Sega's Shining series sequel Shining Blade heads the week's charts in Japan, where Konami's dating sim sequel Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side Premium: 3rd Story edges out Puella Magi Madoka Magica Portable for second place.

North America: 1. Mass Effect 3 (EA Games, X360), 2. Just Dance 3 (Ubisoft, Wii), 3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision, X360), 4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision, X360), 5. Mario Party 9 (Nintendo, Wii).

Japan: 1. Shining Blade (Sega, PSP), 2. Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side Premium: 3rd Story (Konami, PSP), 3. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Portable - Limited Edition (Bandai Namco, PSP), 4. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Portable (Namco Bandai, PSP), 5. One Piece Kaizoku Musou (Bandai Namco, PS3).

UK: 1. Mass Effect 3 (EA Games, X360), 2. Zumba Fitness (505 Games, Wii), 3. Mass Effect 3 (EA Games, PC), 4. Mario Party 9 (Nintendo, Wii), 5. SSX (EA Sports, X360).


Nintendo Wii

Just Dance 3 remains the Wii's top seller in North America, fending off competition from Nintendo's Mario Party 9. Just Dance Wii reports top sales in Japan, meanwhile, as Zumba Fitness and Mario Party 9 leads the week's results in Europe.

North America: 1. Just Dance 3 (Ubisoft), 2. Mario Party 9 (Nintendo), 3. Zumba Fitness (Majesco), 4. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft), 5. Zumba Fitness 2 (Majesco).

Japan: 1. Just Dance Wii (Nintendo), 2. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo), 3. Karaoke Joysound Wii Super DX (Hudson), 4. Hoshi no Kirby Wii (Nintendo), 5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo).

UK: 1. Zumba Fitness (505 Games), 2. Mario Party 9 (Nintendo), 3. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Sega), 4. Zumba Fitness 2 (505 Games), 5. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft).


Xbox 360

Mass Effect 3 heads Xbox 360 platform sales worldwide in its debut week. Konami's aerial combat title Birds of Steel takes second place in its debut week in Japan, as EA's SSX reports especially strong sales in the UK.

North America: 1. Mass Effect 3 (EA Games), 2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision), 3. Gears of War 3 (Microsoft), 4. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda), 5. Mass Effect 2 (EA Games).

Japan: 1. Mass Effect 3 (EA Games), 2. Birds of Steel (Konami), 3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda), 4. SSX (EA Sports), 5. Alan Wake (Microsoft).

UK: 1. Mass Effect 3 (EA Games), 2. SSX (EA Sports), 3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision), 4. FIFA 12 (EA Sports), 5. Forza Motorsport 4 (Microsoft).


PlayStation 3

Modern Warfare 3 maintains top sales this week at Amazon, edging out Sony's recently released MLB 12: The Show and Uncharted 3. Mass Effect 3 claims top honors in Europe, as the One Piece-themed Dynasty Warriors spinoff One Piece Kaizoku Musou leads platform sales in Japan.

North America: 1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision), 2. MLB 12: The Show (SCEA), 3. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (SCEA), 4. Assassin's Creed: Revelations (Ubisoft), 5. Mass Effect 2 (EA Games).

Japan: 1. One Piece Kaizoku Musou (Bandai Namco), 2. Idolmaster Anime & G4U Pack Vol. 3 (Bandai Namco), 3. Winning Post 7 2012 (Koei Tecmo), 4. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix), 5. Kidou Senshi Gundam UC (Bandai Namco).

UK: 1. Mass Effect 3 (EA Games), 2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision), 3. SSX (EA Sports), 4. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (SCEE), 5. FIFA 12 (EA Sports).


PC

Downloadable titles claim the top three PC sales spots in the United States this week. Battlefield 3 heads the week's results in Japan, while Mass Effect 3 beats The Sims 3 Showtime in Japan.

North America: 1. Assassin's Creed Director's Cut - Download Edition (Ubisoft), 2. The Settlers: Rise of an Empire Gold Edition - Download Edition (Ubisoft), 3. Battlefield 3 - Download Edition (EA Games), 4. Star Wars: The Old Republic (EA Games), 5. Call of Juarez 2: Bound in Blood (Ubisoft).

Japan: 1. Battlefield 3 (EA Games), 2. Shin Sangoku Musou 6 with Mushouden (Koei Tecmo), 3. SimCity 4 Deluxe (EA Games), 4. Nobunaga no Yabou Online: Houou no Shou Premium Box (Koei Tecmo), 5. The Sims 3: Showtime (EA Games).

UK: 1. Mass Effect 3 (EA Games), 2. The Sims 3 Showtime - Katy Perry Collector's Edition (EA Games), 3. The Sims 3 Showtime: Limited Edition (EA Games), 4. Football Manager 2012 (Sega), 5. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda).


Nintendo 3DS

A price-dropped Tetris Axis heads up the Nintendo 3DS sales charts stateside, leaving former chart leaders Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land at second and third place.

Hatsune Miku and Future Stars: Project Mirai tops platform sales in its premiere week in Japan, meanwhile, as Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land overtake Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the UK.

North America: 1. Tetris Axis (Nintendo), 2. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo), 3. Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo), 4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (Nintendo), 5. Resident Evil: Revelations (Capcom).

Japan: 1. Hatsune Miku and Future Stars: Project Mirai (Sega), 2. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo), 3. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (Square Enix), 4. Onna no Ko to Misshitsu ni Itara **shichau Kamoshirenai (D3), 5. Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo).

PlayStation Vita

Uncharted: Golden Abyss continues to lead domestic PS Vita software sales, as recent releases MLB 12: The Show and Unit 13 also report strong debuts.

Gravity Daze spends another week at the top of the Japanese charts, while EA's FIFA Football emerges as the platform's biggest seller in the UK.
