Electronic Arts has announced an unexpected agreement with Texas-based Doom
creators id Software, to publish id Tech5 engine title RAGE
via its EA Partners distribution label.
Built on id Software's newest game engine, id Tech 5, RAGE
is officially described by the firm as "an all-new take on the first person shooter," and is being developed for release on the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Mac.
Id's John Carmack first demonstrated
the engine (with associated RAGE
assets) at Steve Jobs's WWDC07 keynote, but details of the game have thus far been kept relatively under wraps.
This still seems to be the case, but id's defection from long-term publishing partner Activision towards Electronic Arts, which has released several mobile titles masterminded by John Carmack and developer Fountainhead in recent years, is notable.
According to the companies, additional information about RAGE
will be released at id's own QuakeCon 2008 in Dallas, Texas from July 31 to August 2nd.
publishing deal is the epitome of EA Partners' mission: Provide the world's best developers with access to the world's best publishing resources," said David DeMartini, senior vice president and general manager of EA Partners. "The team at id Software is one of the best development studios in the world. We're excited to work with id Software to give RAGE
a blockbuster launch on the global stage."
