UK Charts: Resident Evil 5 Breaks Records For Capcom

Resident Evil 5 has gone straight to the top of the UK individual and all-platform charts, becoming the fastest selling entry in the franchise so far. Not only that, but the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title also became Capcom’s biggest ever launch in the country.

The Xbox 360 version of the game just outsold the PlayStation 3 version with 55 percent of sales, thereby claiming the top spot in the individual platforms chart. The PlayStation 3 version outsold the PlayStation 2 launch of Resident Evil 4 by a factor of 3.22 to 1 – although the predecessor’s staggered launch across multiple platforms makes direct comparisons difficult.

Combined sales of the game also made the title the biggest all platforms number one since Call of Duty: World at War’s second week last Christmas – surpassing even EA’s FIFA 09. Resident Evil 5 also accounted for 27.1 percent of all revenues from console games in the UK last week, outselling the rest of the all platforms top 10 in its entirety.

As usual for European charts no specific sales data was made available, although yesterday Capcom indicated that 4 million units of the game had been shipped worldwide.

Elsewhere in the individual platforms chart there were a number of other new entries, with Sony’s long delayed SOCOM: Confrontation on PlayStation 3 debuting at number 10 – a good result for a franchise that has never performed especially well in the UK charts.

New at number 14 is Disney’s Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force on the Nintendo DS, a direct tie-in to the company’s popular Club Penguin online community. Also new at number 21 is critically-panned Wii exclusive Sonic and the Black Knight from Sega.

New at number 33 is Namco Bandai’s Family Ski & Snowboard for Wii. Although first released in the UK two weeks ago this is the title’s first appearance in the charts following new TV advertising from European publisher Atari.

Finally, at number 38 is Atlus’ critically acclaimed Persona 4 on PlayStation 2. Published in the UK by Square Enix, it is the first game in the series to reach the top 40 and has charted higher than any of Square Enix’s other recent in-house releases, including Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest V and The Last Remnant.

In the separate all-platform chart, which combines all SKUs of a game into a single chart position, the top three sees Resident Evil 5 at number one, followed by Wii Fit (up one place but with sales down 14 percent) and Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X (also up one place but with sales down 19 percent).

Overall, in the top 40 chart by individual platforms, there are 10 titles on the Wii, nine each on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo DS, two on the PC, one on the PlayStation 2 and none on the PSP.
