Sony officials have confirmed plans to allow certain Blu-ray movie discs to upload a version of the movie or television show to the PSP, in order to watch a version of the same content without any additional cost.
Speaking to consumer website PC World at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2008, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president David Bishop demonstrated the new feature by uploading a specially formatted version of Blu-ray movie Men in Black from a PlayStation 3 to a PSP memory card.
Other additional content can also be derived from supported discs, including mobile phone ring tones and online interactive games played on supporting players (which includes the PlayStation 3). "There was always the promise of greater interactivity. You'll see that coming in the new year," said Bishop.
Although no other movie studio has yet announced similar features for their own discs, Warner Bros. began including standard definition versions of their moves on discs last year. Although the move by Sony is likely to be welcomed by customers, it does cast a further shadow over future UMD releases for movie and other video content.
