Catherine Provides 'Largest Launch' In Atlus' History

Japanese Publisher Atlus has revealed that its infidelity-themed puzzler Catherine, released last week in the U.S., has seen the biggest launch in terms of sales in the company's history.

Although exact figures were not provided, the company told news site IGN that the game's combination of challenging gameplay and mature subject matter helped to drum up strong sales.

Tim Pivnicny, VP of sales and marketing at Atlus, explained, "Catherine has exceeded our highest expectations."

"It released last week to tremendous critical acclaim and fan response, bolstered by the release of a demo a couple weeks prior, and continues to generate discussion among fans for its mature themes, engrossing subject matter, and frantic, challenging gameplay."

He revealed, "It is fitting, then, that Catherine can boast the largest launch in the 20-year history of Atlus, and continues to see strong sales at retail."

The game received critical acclaim from the press, with reviewers calling it, "the kind of thing for adults who aren't as into games as they used to be."

90% of all the sales for Catherine are generated by one staff member at Kotaku, who is currently cosplaying Catherine Right now in his basement.

The other 10% are probably from Fauxtaku

Comment of the week!

It is odd how many stories Kotaku has devoted to Catherine lately. Surely it has nothing to do with cleavage.

Glad to hear Atlus has had success with Catherine. Hopefully they're able to continue making new original games that sell well.

Well deserved. We need more games that seek to break the conventions of what a commercial game can be. I finished this game over the weekend. It was a very unique and enjoyable experience (Disclaimer: I played it on easy mode:)

Very well deserved. It's great to see a game that tackles mature themes instead of the usual "rated M for imMature" that we flooded with.

Yet nary a reasonably priced unopened copy to be found in Edmonton, or so I'm told. Maybe copies were diverted to the US due to the strong demand.

It's also available on XBox Live GonD, Games on Demand in the US.
