Apple has revealed sales of over 187 million iOS devices through March, including 108 million iPhones, 60 million iPod Touches, and 19 million iPads, ahead of a financial results announcement.
Overall iPhone sales have more than doubled since just after the iPhone 4's release last April, when Apple had sold 50 million of the devices overall. Roughly 35 million iPod Touches had been sold at that time, indicating a relative slowdown in sales of the touch-screen device in the past year.
The new figures come as part of a federal complaint filed by Apple against Samsung Electronics last week [PDF] over alleged copying of the iPhone's user interface.
A new ComScore report estimates that iOS has 37.9 million active users in the U.S., outpacing Android by 59 percent.
Worldwide, however, analysis firm Canalys sees sales of new Android smartphones outpacing those on iOS as recently as February.
Still way behind the hundreds of millions of Nokia devices (Symbian etc) sold ... sad to see that Gamasutra has become flooded with Iphone etc stories, when they're merely 3rd place in mobile computing.
It's also rather unfair to compare Android phones to Apple phones, tablets and mp3 players. If we're looking at all mobile devices, then Windows netbooks significantly outsell the Ipad.
Symbian may still be larger, but smartphones are growing incredibly quickly as options increase and prices come down. Smartphones are also where all the game developer attention is in the mobile space, and for good reason -- more powerful, touch/tilt interfaces, low barrier to entry, easy-to-use storefronts and the potential for much more massive sales success than most companies could even see on feature phones.
As for the comparison, Android is expanding to tablets rather quickly. Regardless, when evaluating which OS to develop for, the total potential audience across tablets and more mobile devices is important.
It would be better to see some kind of data of number of people that play games on these 187 Million devices. And what the cost of the average game was. My guess is 99cents or less.
Iwata got it right--these devices are killing the value of game software.
