Game publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment said Thursday it signed a long-term, studio-wide licensing deal to use Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 in upcoming WBIE titles.
The publisher said that under the licensing agreement, UE3 would be available for any team developing a Warner-published title on PC, console and mobile platforms.
Warner added that through 2014, UE3 will be the exclusive engine for subsidiary studios Rocksteady and NetherRealm.
Rocksteady is developer of UE3-based Batman: Arkham Asylum and is currently working on Batman: Arkham City, which pushes UE3 with the game's implementation of larger environments.
The team at NetherRealm, developer of the Mortal Kombat series, also already has experience with UE3, having used the engine for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Online and the upcoming reboot Mortal Kombat.
Epic Games VP Mark Rein said in a statement, "We look forward to seeing how the engine will contribute to the upcoming games from these teams and potentially other Warner teams and external developers who develop or publish with Warner."
You forgot Cry Engine 3 and Unity. Both are being used by a lot of devs out there. CE3 is being used in 3 MMOs at least and Unity is being very used by devs to create games to Iphone and PSP. In fact, there are some others engines in the market, but all others cant compete in this level.
I hate you Bethesda! You make buggy games (with good story, that is buggy too, disregarding past games), and now monopolized id tech :(
People should not forget ever, that in fact there are only two engines in the market: Id Tech (Source is derived from Id Tech) and Unreal
Now if one wants Id Tech, need to use Source (that is getting kinda outdated too...)
Or one of the bazillions of outdated clones... (like, Cube 2, Dark Places, ioQuake, etc...)
Whoa, I am in ranty mood today.
