Discord adds verification for game developer-led servers

Discord adds verification for game developer-led servers

October 12, 2017 | By Alissa McAloon

Discord has just introduced a new feature that game developers might want to keep on their radars. The popular chat app now offers developers the option of setting up verified servers to better connect with their communities.

Joining the verified Servers program stamps a nice, official-looking checkmark next to a server’s name and icon in Discord so players can quickly tell that it is the official, developer-provided server.

Only servers being run by a game’s developer or publisher are eligible for verification, something that Discord hopes will cement those official channels as a go-to source for information on each game in the minds of its players, all while helping devs build a close-knit online community.

Verifying a server comes with a handful of cosmetic perks as well, like a vanity URL and a customizable splash page. Discord says it’s already roped 100 developers into the program, including Clash of Clans dev SuperCell, Squad dev Offworld Industries, and Minecraft owner Microsoft.

There are a few other requirements servers have to meet ahead of verification, however. These range from having a written set of rules to implementing a medium auto-moderation level and explicit content filters. Full details on those requirements can be found on Discord’s FAQ while the button to apply for verification can be found over on the company’s website
