During a live keynote at QuakeCon, id Software's John Carmack announced apocalyptic first-person shooter title Rage is going to the iPhone. The game will be released later this year -- ahead of 2011's PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.
Carmack demonstrated the game running on iPhone 4, but said it can also run on 3GS, and that it looks best on the iPad. According to a report from consumer weblog Joystiq, the small-sized Rage was born of experiments on the Wii.
The iOS version of Rage will run at 60 frames-per-second. A second Rage iPhone game will also be coming next year, launching simultaneously with the PC and console releases.
During the presentation, Carmack also said that id Software is considering the Android market for Rage as well, but has not made a final decision as of yet.
Rage walked away from E3 this year with three Game Critics Awards, including best console game, best action game and "special commendation for graphics." It also held the record for highest number of nominations with a total of five.
Since the GPU is the same on many devices (powerVR SGX) it should be just a matter of linking the proper libraries to run this on Android, or any other platform. Also a port for any Tegra tablet should be quite straigthforward.
Anyway another great toy that no one wlse will play with. iD is great at tech but now without any licensing options all others will have to wait for EPIC to release their iphone platform.
"The console system that Id is now looking at is the Atari Jaguar. The Id designers were very excited about it initially and were going to develop for it after they completed the SNES version of Doom. Id is betting that Atari will ship over 500,000 Jaguar consoles. After their experience with Nintendo, the Id designers decided to primarily work for the Atari Jaguar." (Game Developer magazine, premier issue, January 1994)
I guess he's just really interested in everything he does and comprehends it so well.
I can't help thinking of Professor Frink when he talks though, it's laced with "Mmmy" sounds and that nasal whine that sounds like a bee whistling a kazoo in an envelope.
IdTech5 sounds like a nightmare on the licensing front but it's showing some nice scalability here.
@Daniel MD: "(powerVR SGX)... Also a port for any Tegra tablet should be quite straigthforward."
How can you liken POWERVR SGX architecture to Tegra? What makes you think a port should be so straight forward? Do you have any idea what you are talking about?
@Marque Pierre Sondergaard: What? You clearly misread. What i said is that many phones use the powerVR SGX GPU so porting is a matter of linking the proper libraries, therefor support for Android is a feasible possibility. And also a port to the Tegra2 could be quite simple, since you can reuse most of the OpenGL ES code and take into account a few particularities of the platform (on SGX you have tile rendering this is not the case in Tegra), optimize shaders, etc...
Shiva3D is a 7 man dev operation and they support all the platforms i mentioned, therefore a shop like iD would easilly port this to Tegra2.
Yes i do have a very clear idea and dev kits for all the mentioned platforms.
@cam Jones: A nightmare to license? No. There is no license :( unless you develop for bethesda/zenimax.

Happy/Sad day.
