At Comic-Con last week, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono revealed Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition, an online remake of the 1999 arcade fighting game.
Ono said that the company has just started work on the game, and a release date is still relatively far off, 1UP reported. The development team said it would monitor feedback and feature requests at the Capcom-Unity website.
The original Street Fighter III released in 1997, followed by 2nd Impact later that year and then 1999's Third Strike, the final arcade version of the game. Each entry added more features, characters and different gameplay mechanics. Capcom also released home versions of the game on Dreamcast, Xbox and PS2.
Reports said that Ono did not specify target platforms for Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition, but there is speculation that it would be a downloadable title on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.
Capcom successfully brought back to market Super Street Fighter II Turbo with 2008's Backbone-developed Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, released on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN. At the time of the game's release, Capcom said the $15 title had over 250,000 downloads in its opening three weeks.
The company also re-released 2000's arcade and Sega Dreamcast fighter Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN in 2009. Capcom U.S. VP Christian Svensson said shortly after the game's Xbox Live Arcade release that "It could become our best selling digital title so far. It's actually surprised us."

It sounds to me that Capcom should do a bit of research on what its fans want. I would love to see many of the classic fighters from Darkstalkers to SF Alpha 1-3 on the service as well. My arcade cabinet`s monitor is dying so soon I won`t be able to play the few CPS2 games I have (X-Men vs. SF being one I`ll miss very much).
Of course, I don`t represent the masses and of course, flooding the market too fast can saturate it and devalue your other offerings, but it doesn`t seem unreasonable for Capcom to explore this idea further with a bit of research.
So wait... Xbox shuts off Live service for Xbox games... so I can't play Street Fighter 3 online anymore... but if I re-buy it... I can play it online again? Rad.
