The latest in Namco Bandai’s long-running Super Robot Wars
series has debuted at number one in the Japanese charts this week. It heads a large number of peculiarly Japanese new releases, all of which are for either portable platforms or the PlayStation 2.
Super Robot Wars K
is the third title in the series to be released on the Nintendo DS, and as with most entries in the tactical role-playing franchise features characters and robots from a variety of different Japanese manga and anime. The new title sold 117,000 units in its first week.
New at number two is Konami’s Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyu 2009
, previous versions of which have been sold in the U.S. as MLB Power Pros
. The PS2 title sold only 50,000 units though, well down on previous totals when the platform was at its height. A Wii entry in the series was also released this week, but charted only at number nine, with 22,000 units sold.
Also new at number three is dating simulator Amagami
, from Famitsu magazine publisher Enterbrain. The PS2 game sold a respectable 42,000 units.
There are nine other new entries in the rest of the top 30 this week, all for the DS and PSP. Most are from minor Japanese publishers and aimed solely at the home market, although what is known in the West as Ape Quest
- part of the Ape Escape
series – does make a belated appearance in the Japanese market at number 13.
New PSP Harvest Moon
title Bokujou Monogatari: Sugar Mura to Minna no Negai
enters the charts at number 14 and Square Enix’s tie-in to their own manga series Kuroshitsuji: Phantom & Ghost
appears at number 15.
