Floodgate: A Potent New Tool for Next-Gen Development
Everybody’s talking about how to make the most of the multi-processor power of next-gen consoles like the Xbox 360™ and PLAYSTATION®3. With Emergent’s Gamebryo Element game engine and toolset, we’re doing something about it. The latest version of Gamebryo includes Floodgate, a new stream processing engine that helps you squeeze the most processing power out of every core. Floodgate allows you to optimize and take advantage of SPUs—and reap the rewards on all platforms.
Developing for multi-processor platforms like PS3 can be difficult, and balancing the characteristics of multiple platforms only increases those difficulties. With Floodgate, applications quickly and easily take advantage of the processor and memory configuration on each platform. Once the programmer specifies the operations to perform and the associated streams of data (graphics, AI, sound and physics data, for example), Floodgate executes those operations with maximum efficiency. The impact on cross-platform projects is significant, enabling developers to harness the power of idle SPUs on PS3 while optimizing cache utilization across multiple cores on the Xbox 360 and PC.
Floodgate lets users create entire workflows of interconnected tasks which are then analyzed, broken down, and scheduled for execution across all available cores and SPUs. Workflows can be created during execution based on information at runtime, or they can be cached for execution multiple times. This flexibility enables the user to combine scores of small operations in a very simple way to achieve sophisticated objectives. The result? You don’t have to predefine everything at compile time—your game can adjust dynamically during execution, an approach that offers critical control and ease of use in what otherwise would be a very complex development environment.
Small and large stream processing applications can also benefit from Floodgate. Procedural geometry and textures, particle systems, physics, animation, AI and sound are just a few examples. Advanced graphics techniques like shadow volume extrusion, silhouette edge detection and volume rendering are all well-suited for Floodgate.
Floodgate’s powerful approach to multi-core development goes far beyond the capabilities of any similar solutions we’ve seen. Transform your PS3 and Xbox 360 development efforts with the power and control of Floodgate.
