My Response to a Cover Letter...
The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community.
The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company.
Just a quick response, here are a few tips for landing that hard to find, competitive gig in the games industry that hundreds of your peers are competing with you for:
- Create a comprehensive and high-quality portfolio site showcasing your best work. It’s not enough to say you have done great stuff, you have to show it.
- Have a resume that is tailored for the game industry, showcasing both your professional career and your game or mod work. Again, show people your best stuff!
- Don’t send late-night, admittedly drunken, rambling emails to the head of the company you want to work for.
- Don’t refer to the Studio Manager as the “HR Girl.”
If you truly have created great things, you will get hired if you continue to apply yourself and follow the tips I provided above. They served me well over a decade ago when I struggled to get into the games industry. Just don’t give up.
